Sebastiano “Sam” Russano

Sebastiano “Sam” Russano, 87, of Phillipsburg, NJ passed away peacefully on March 1st, 2025.

Born on August 15, 1937, in Santa Maria La Fossa, Italy, he embarked on a life journey that took him across the ocean to America at the age of 16. Accompanied by his mother, Ilda, and his brother Antimo, he arrived by boat with hopes for a new beginning. Eighteen months later, the rest of his family joined them, marking the start of a new chapter in their lives.

Sam built a career as a machinist and home repair man upon settling in the United States. He was always willing to lend a hand when something needed fixing. His generosity and willingness to help others became defining traits throughout his life.

Beyond work, Sam found joy in simple pleasures—spending time with family and friends was always at the heart of his days. He had a fondness for playing the lottery and betting on horses, small pastimes that brought him excitement and entertainment.

He is survived by his daughters Diana Fratesi and her husband Dan, Roseanne Holland, and Terre Shelley; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He also leaves behind his beloved siblings Mary, Antimo, Anna, Concetta, Nicolina, and Marta and many nieces and nephews.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents Sebastiano and Ilda Russano; brothers, a sister and a grandchild.

His memory will live on through those who knew him best—his family and friends who shared in his laughter, kindness, and unwavering willingness to help others. May his legacy bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.

Visiting hours will be held at Finegan Funeral Home, 302 Heckman Street in Phillipsburg, NJ on Saturday, March 8th, 2025 from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM with a Funeral Service beginning at 11:00 AM.  The interment will be at St. Magdalen Cemetery in Flemington.
