Michael H. Johnson
Michael H. Johnson of Clymer Village in Phillipsburg, NJ, was called home into the arms of our Lord while surrounded by family on September 28, 2024 after having suffered complications from being struck by a car in May. Born May 14, 1957 in Phillipsburg, NJ, he was the son of the late Harry and Elizabeth (Schmauser) Johnson, grandson of the late Frank and Bernice (Hayford) Schmauser and Alford and Helen (Breiner) Johnson. Michael graduated from St Mary’s grammar school in Alpha, NJ, and attended Phillipsburg High School, in Phillipsburg, NJ. He was a devout catholic, member and usher of St Philip and St James Catholic Church and attended Gateway for 27 years and the Family Guidance Center for 30 years where he had various custodial jobs early on.
Surviving are his brother Joe and his wife Gail Johnson and brother Jeff and his wife Kathy Johnson; two nieces: Katie with her husband Nick Whalen and their daughter Ella Elizabeth, and Kristen with her husband Ricky Mackes and their sons Fredrick, Henry and Hudson and a nephew Joseph Johnson; also his Uncle Ron and Aunt Anna (Schmauser) Knoble, his Knoble cousins: Karen, Kathy, Jim, Jeanne, John, and David, as well as their spouses and their children and many second and third cousins.
Michael had many friends at Clymer Village and throughout Phillipsburg and was always ready to lend a hand to a friend, neighbor, or anyone in need. He loved sharing stories with others, walking to get coffee and a butter roll every morning and keeping his home spotlessly clean. He was a kind and generous person who loved going to flea markets and antique shops and collecting and giving away antiques, especially if they had been handed down from his family’s preceding generations. He would always have a story to tell with each item and became known as the family historian. Michael loved his family and he treasured his pictures of them. He was fondly referred to as “Uncle Mike.” In addition to his love of family and friends, Michael loved God. He prayed the rosary multiple times every day for anyone and everyone who needed one. When living on Front Street in Phillipsburg, he would walk a mile to and from St Philip and St James Catholic Church to attend daily Mass. Around Christmas time every year he loved baking and handing out his sugar cookies and German cookies.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2024 from 9:00 am to 10:15 am at St. Philip and St. James Catholic Church at 430 South Main Street, Phillipsburg, NJ, with a Funeral Mass beginning at 10:30 am.
