Peter Kassis

After a brief and courageous battle with leukemia, Peter Kassis, 89, of Easton, Pennsylvania, passed to his eternal reward on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, in his home with his loving family at his side.

Peter was born in the village of Kfarsghab, Lebanon, a son of the late Abraham and Nazha (Sassine) Kassis.

In 1953, Peter immigrated from Lebanon to the United States to begin a new life.  After years of determination and hard work, he became a successful entrepreneur as the owner of the Holiday Inn and Charcoal Hearth Restaurant in Phillipsburg, NJ.  For nineteen years, he operated the hotel and banquet facilities with the help of his brother, Joseph.  Upon his retirement from the business, he remained involved in his real estate investments.

Peter was a devout member of Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church.  He attended mass regularly and was always present among the church community. He especially looked forward to attending the Lebanese Heritage Day festival each year.  Peter would return to Lebanon every year to visit with his family and friends.  He embraced his heritage with a passion. But above all else, he enjoyed spending time with his family in America, especially during holidays and celebrations. He was known for his caring and humble nature as much as he was for his accomplishments.  He was especially loved for his sense of humor.

While there were many facets of Peter’s life that were important to him, his true love was his companion and partner in life, Sanna Baurkot, who stayed by his side and cared for him for over 55 years.

In addition to Sanna, Peter is survived by his daughter, Monica Paolino and husband Anthony of Cranston, RI, granddaughters Simone and Yasmine Paolino, great-grandchildren Natalina and Maximus Richard, brother Joseph Kassis of Palmer Twp., sister Nadia Maroon of Sydney, Australia, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in the United States, Lebanon, and Australia. He was preceded in death by his sisters Evette Elias and husband Fayez, Doura Anthony and husband Conan, Laurice Tabet and husband Elias, brother John Kassis and wife Berlin, sister-in-law Barbara Kassis, and brother-in-law Aziz Maroon.

Calling hours will be held on Monday September 20, 2021, from 8:30 am to 10:30 am at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church, 4th & Ferry Streets, Easton, Pennsylvania. A Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday immediately following the calling hours in the church. Interment will be in Gethsemane Cemetery in Palmer Township.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Peter’s memory may be made to Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church, 55 South 4th Street, Easton, Pennsylvania 18042.
