Patrick Joseph O’Mahony

Patrick was born on March 15, 1933 in the small village of Cloughjordan, County Tipperary, Ireland, the youngest son of 11 children of Alice and Jeremiah O’Mahony.

Patrick’s father died when he was eight years old, leaving him to shoulder shared responsibility for the care of his mother and family members.  During the years of WWII when families in Ireland struggled for necessities, Pat could be relied upon to find work in the village, hares in the traps, or fish in the river to help support the family.  But as was the case in the 1950’s, Pat left his home at an early age to find work in the south of Ireland, and then in England, working in construction.  He easily found work due to his sharp mind and ingenuity in being able to solve construction problems.  During his time away, he regularly sent his wages home to help his mother and younger siblings.

In 1953 he left for Africa to pursue construction work.  He spent seven years in Northern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), working on various projects such as energy-generating stations and the construction of mines.  In 1962, he left Africa for the shores of America to pursue opportunities surrounding construction preparation for the World’s Fair in New York City.  It was during his time in NYC that he met his future wife, Sarah, and began his life in America.  After spending time in upstate NY, he settled in Stewartsville, where he spent the next 40 years of his life doing what he loved:  working on his farm.  He grew the farm he purchased by adding a horse training track, riding arenas, and horse barns, and operated a horse training facility with his wife and family.

Patricks’ wife, Sarah preceded him in death in 2016 after 49 years of a loving marriage.  His remaining family includes his son, John, and wife Sabine; daughter Patricia and husband Ashraf; his two grandchildren, Lilah and Sarah, along with his sister Brigid of Canada, and sister Teresa of Ireland.

Patrick will be reposing at his home at 633 South Main Street, Stewartsville, and family and friends are invited to pay their respects there from 6pm to 9pm on Monday, October 28, 2019.  Service and internment will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at 10 am at Saints Philip and James Cemetery, Greenwich Township, N.J. The Finegan Funeral Home in Phillipsburg is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stewartsville Emergency Squad or Stewartsville Volunteer Fire Company.
