Joseph A. Merlo

 Born on July 3, 1930, in Easton, he was the son of the late Carmelo and Josephine Glorioso Merlo. His wife of 54 years, Jane C. Hertkorn Merlo, passed away in 2008.

Joe was employed with J.T. Baker Chemical Co. for 41 years, as a Chemical Handler, retiring in 1992. After retirement, he filled some of his time delivering for Phillipsburg Pharmacy and helping at Finegan Funeral Home. He was a devout Catholic, participating in Weekly Devotions at St. Philip & St. James Catholic Church, where he was a member and Eucharistic Minister. Joe was a diehard fan of the NY Yankees, football Giants and Notre Dame. When his children were growing up he was a scout leader and baseball coach. He was a graduate of SPSJ Parochial High School, member of Knights of Columbus and the Phillipsburg Exchange Club.

Joe is survived by his children Robert Merlo and his wife Patricia of Easton, Pa., and Mary Elizabeth DePree and her husband Douglas of Honea Path, SC.; and his brother Nicholas Merlo of Lopatcong Twp., his grandchildren are Joseph and Michale DePree, and his fur grandkids are Abigail, Ziva and Angie. He was preceded in death by his brothers John and Carmen, and his sisters Mary Chillot, Sally Merlo, Seraphina LoBalbo, Joan Sciascia and Josephine Marotta. 

Viewing hours will be held on Thursday June 14, 2018 from 6 to 9 pm at The Finegan Funeral Home, 302 Heckman St., Phillipsburg, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday June 15th, 2018 at 10am at St. Philip & St. James Catholic Church, 430 S. Main St., Phillipsburg, NJ. Interment will be in the parish cemetery in Greenwich Twp., NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SPSJ Church, 08865.
