John J. “Jack” Carey III

John J. “Jack” Carey III, 82, of Lopatcong Township, NJ, passed away peacefully in his home, on Saturday, January 9, 2021.

Born on November 21, 1938, in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of the late John and Dorothy (Schultz) Carey.

Jack joined the United States Navy out of high school and served honorably from 1957 to 1961. Jack graduated from two Navy Schools, the first to become a Navy Hospital Corpsman and the second was the Navy School of Pharmacy. For a period, Jack was stationed at the Naval pilot training facility which trained many astronauts. Following his tenure in the Navy he began working as a chemist for Mennen, which was later purchased by Colgate, and worked there until his retirement in 2006. He was a parishioner at St. Philip and St. James Church, in Phillipsburg, NJ, and was very active in the Holy Name Society as well as the Exchange Club.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Eileen M. (O’Shaughnessy) Carey, his sons; Jim Carey and his wife Korin, of Branchburg, NJ, Jason Carey, of Easton, PA, and Brian Carey and his fiancé Ashley Stettner, of Phillipsburg, NJ, his grandchildren; Matthew, Emma and Grace, his brothers; Robert Carey, of Newton, NJ and Dennis Carey, of Hillsborough, NC and his nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, Jack  was predeceased by his sister, Judy Carey, his brother, Kenneth Carey and several grandchildren.

A Viewing is scheduled for Thursday, January 14, 2021, from 5 to 7 PM at the Finegan Funeral Home, 302 Heckman St, Phillipsburg, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial is set for 10 AM the following day, Friday, January 15, 2021, at St. Philip and St. James Church, 430 South Main Street, Phillipsburg, NJ, with the interment to directly follow at the Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 75 North Church Road, Sparta, NJ.
