Born on August 14, 1930 in Phillipsburg, NJ, he was the son of Pietro DePaolis and Angelina Micarelli DePaolis. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Loretta (Buscemi), son David, daughter Diane, brothers John and Enrico, grandchildren Conor and Alexandra Albino, and predeceased by his sister Algia Famularo.
He graduated from Phillipsburg High School where he excelled in baseball, football, and track. Gildo volunteered to serve in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War. Prior to his combat duties he was the only Marine selected to the Far East All Navy all-star baseball team. Gildo was awarded two purple hearts for his battle wounds, retiring honorably with the rank of Sergeant.
Upon discharge Gildo joined the NJ Department of Corrections where he served for 39 years, retiring as Chief Deputy Keeper of Corrections in 1993.
Gildo was a devout member of St. Phillip and St. James Church. In addition, he was a life member of The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Disabled American Veterans, Policeman’s Benevolent Association, and Life Member of the Italian American Social Club. He also coached youth baseball for PAL for many years.
Viewing hours will be held on Thursday January 31, 2019 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm at The Finegan Funeral Home, 302 Heckman St., Phillipsburg, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on February 1, 2019 at St. Philip & St. James Catholic Church, 430 S. Main St., Phillipsburg, NJ. Interment will be in the parish cemetery in Greenwich Twp., NJ.
