She was born January 14, 1934, in Brainards, New Jersey, the daughter of Michael and Anna (nee Sokol) Osifchin, immigrants from the village of Udol, Slovak Republic.
Evelyn graduated from Belvidere High School in 1952. She excelled at sports, dancing and competitive activities. Her nickname among her teammates was “Mickey Mantle” because she could really slug a home run. After high school she worked as a secretary for several companies in the Phillipsburg and Easton area.
Although diagnosed as a young adult with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis, she persisted in enjoying life. She was a talented seamstress and for years enjoyed her Bridge club and was a fierce player. She loved to swim and go to the beach and was an active member of the Y.
Evelyn enjoyed people and making friends; she thrived in social settings and loved participating in gatherings and outings. Even as her struggles with health increased, nothing made her feel better than having friends and family around her. She was a devoted grandmother and generously helped support her grandchildren’s education.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter Grace Keown and husband Donald Pendleton; her beloved grandchildren, Jackson and Kamaryn; brothers, Michael (Margaret), Robert (Sandy) and Edward; her sister Olga Donat; and nieces and nephews and longtime companion Chester Nechetsky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Keown, in 1989.
