Enzo D. Marinelli, 89, of Lopatcong Twp., NJ, passed away on October 11, 2020 at his home, surrounded by family. Born on April 28, 1931, in New Village, NJ, he was the son of the late Oreste and Clelia Urbanelli Marinelli.
Enzo graduated from Washington High School in 1949 where he lettered in football, wrestling and baseball. He was a NJ State Champion in wrestling in 1949. He received his BA in 1953 and his master’s degree in 1954 from Syracuse University. While at Syracuse he was a member of the football team and was a 3-year letter winner in wrestling. Also at Syracuse, he was a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa, a P.E., health and recreation honorary fraternity, and a member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. He received his Administrative certificate from Seton Hall University. Enzo coached football and wrestling for grades 7-8 at Warren Hills Junior High School where he also taught Health, P.E., Life and Earth Science. He spent 10 years as the Athletic Director at Washington High School and Warren Hills. Enzo moved on to be the Assistant Principal of Warren Hills Junior High School where he retired in 1994 with a total of 40 years in education. Enzo was a wrestling official in the NJSIAA and the PIAA; the latter of which he was voted into the District XI Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1985. In Lopatcong Twp., he coached baseball and wrestling (juniors and midgets) for many years. Enzo was inducted into the Blue Streak Hall of Fame in 2000 and served as its President from 2000 to 2006. Enzo was a member of the St Philip & St. James Holy Name Society, where he was President from 1998 to 2002, and SPSJ Over 50’s Club at the church. He was a regular blood donor with Miller Blood Bank. Enzo was an avid gardener, giving away much of what he grew, and loved to watch his grandsons play sports. He spent 12 years as an Army Reservist with a rank of Sergeant First Class.
Enzo is survived by his wife, the former Yola N. Angelozzi, with whom he celebrated 64 years of marriage on June 23, 2020. He is also survived by his 5 children: Brian Marinelli, Marisa Marinelli and husband Brad Mulder, Lisa Marinelli and husband Bill Winger, Lynne Martoccio and husband Darrell, and Michele Marinelli as well as 6 grandsons: Adam Marinelli; Nicholas Mulder; Brandon Winger; Matthew, Daniel and Lucas Martoccio. Enzo is also survived by his brothers Ronald and Art Marinelli (Duane), brothers-in-law Gino and Nick Angelozzi (Sue) and many nieces and nephews, and extended family in Senigallia, Italy.
Viewing hours will be held on Wednesday October 14, 2020 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at The Finegan Funeral Home, 302 Heckman St., Phillipsburg, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday October 15, 2020 at 10 am at St. Philip & St. James Catholic Church, 430 S. Main St., Phillipsburg, NJ. Entombment will be in the parish mausoleum in Greenwich Twp., NJ.
