Elizabeth “Betty” Peterson Hummell

Betty was born on January 12, 1927, in the home of her Grandfather, Julius Kuss, in Phillipsburg, NJ. She was the daughter of the late Richard Peterson and Agnes Kuss Peterson Wilson.

Betty lived in Phillipsburg nearly all her life. She graduated from Phillipsburg High School in the class of 1944. She retired from Peter P. Dennis & Dennis Gift House where she worked for 19 years and had been a Supervisor for Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania from 1944-1950.

Her husband William N. “Red” Hummell died October 30, 1988. They were married on October 11, 1947, in the Rectory of St. Philip & St. James Church.

Betty was a life-long member of St. Philip & St. James Church in Phillipsburg, where she was a member of the Food for the Needy Committee and the Over 50’s Club. She was a member of the Bernadine May American Legion Auxiliary in Phillipsburg and served as President of the former B.J. Donovan American Legion Auxiliary, was Vice President of the Warren County Auxiliary and served as secretary of the Phillipsburg Memorial Day Parade Committee. She was also a member of the Phillipsburg Area AARP and the National Organization of AARP.

For everyone who knew Betty you knew of her wonderful baking skills. She recently made 22 varieties of Christmas cookies, which totaled over 3000 cookies. If you were on the cookie tray list you would look forward to them each year. The cookie she was most famous for was the Kiffle. She often oversaw the Thanksgiving bake sale at St. Philip & St. James Church and people would start ordering Kiffles in September to ensure they would make in onto the bake sale’s list.

She is survived by her three daughters: Charlene and Lisa at home, Beverly and her husband William H. Carver Jr. of Williams Township; two grandchildren: William H. Carver III and his wife Alissa of Forks Township and Amanda Carver of Baltimore, Maryland and three great-grandsons: Brady, Jeremy & Luke Carver of Forks Township. Betty is also survived by her two sisters: Shirley Weirsky of Alpha, NJ, and Mary Fegley of Palmer Township, PA, and her two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Peterson of Lopatcong, NJ, and Doris Peterson of New Market, New Hampshire.

Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard Peterson and his wife Annie Laurie Dunn Peterson, Robert Peterson & John Peterson as well as a sister, Patricia Stillo and her husband Frank “Cheech” Stillo and brother-in-law, Edward “Eddie” Weirsky.

The viewing will be held on Monday, February 12, 2018, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Finegan Funeral Home, 302 Heckman Street Phillipsburg, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at 10 AM at St. Philip & St. James Catholic Church, 430 South Main St. Phillipsburg, NJ. Interment will follow in the St. Philip & St. James cemetery in Greenwich Township, NJ.
