Daniel J. Flynn

Daniel J. Flynn, 93, of Phillipsburg, NJ, passed away on February 17, 2021, in Bethlehem, Pa. Born in Phillipsburg on November 4, 1927, he was the son of the late Francis and Blanche Cantrel Flynn.

Daniel was employed with Mack Printing, formerly in Easton, for over 40 years before retiring. While there, he acted as an illustrator and writer for the EmPica, a company magazine. He attended St. Phillip and St. James High School and was a member of St. Philip and St. James Catholic Church.

Dan was well-known in local community theater for both his amazing acting skills and beautiful voice. His fellow actors referred to him as "The Legend." He played many leading roles in musicals and also performed in plays, musical reviews, was the Ring Master for the Lions Club Circus, directed several productions, and was in a commercial or two. Dan was a board member for Chansonette Theater, Easton, and a life member of both Pennsylvania Playhouse, Bethlehem and MunOpCo Theatre, Allentown. He also performed in numerous productions at the former Guthsville Playhouse, Percy Brown’s Dinner Theater, Notre Dame Summer Theatre, and the St. Phillip and James Parish Players. In Dan’s later years, he assisted the director of the Freedom High School Theater Program, acting as mentor and sharing the the knowledge, talent, and skills he had gained over the years. To help support the theater groups he loved, Dan designed many program covers over the years and helped with building scenery.

Dan was also known for his skills as an artist. His caricatures and portraits of various people may be found in homes throughout the area, and he did a good number of pen and ink drawings of past presidents of radiology associations, which appeared in their magazines and are displayed at their headquarters in Chicago.

Daniel is survived by his son Canon Key of Phillipsburg; his daughter Kathleen A. Flynn of North Carolina; sisters Mary Lilly, Patricia Flynn and Blanche Gebhard, all of Phillipsburg; and his brother John Flynn of Nazareth, Pa. He was predeceased by his son Mark D. Flynn in 2020, and his brothers Joseph and Francis Flynn.

Viewing hours will be held on Monday, February 22, 2021, from 5 to 7 pm at the Finegan Funeral Home, 302 Heckman Street, Phillipsburg, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, at 10 AM in Mercy Hall at SPSJ Church, 430 S. Main Street, Phillipsburg, NJ. Interment will be in the parish cemetery in Greenwich Twp., NJ.
